Do you have access to an AED at your workplace?

POSTED ON 06 August 2018

Most businesses believe they are first-aid ready but this is rarely the case.

Could you imagine an employee, co-worker or friend having a Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) and not being able to help?

SCA kills more than 33,000 Australians every year. That's more than breast cancer, road fatalities and shootings combined. It can strike at any time, to anyone and often without warning. Survival rate from SCA outside of a hospital setting in as low as 6%, but with an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) survival rates can be as high as 86%.

Survival rates decrease by 10% for every minute that a person's heart is not beating, and on average ambulances take 7-10 minutes to arrive. Victims need to be defibrillated within the first 2-3 minutes for an effective survival rate.

Survival RatesFor every minute your heart is not beating your survival rate decreases by 10%, with the critical minutes to defibrillate at 1-3 minutes after SCA.

All work places, health clubs, gyms, shopping centres and recreation facilities according to St John Ambulance Australia, The Australian Resuscitation Council and the National Heart Foundation believe that increasing the amount of AED's in public facilities is a must for public safety. There are some great success stories out there with a 23 year old man being saved after he went into SCA while at a gym in Tasmania. Thanks to the quick thinking of four community members who were able to locate an AED and provide the necessary lifesaving treatment before the Ambulance arrived.

The Automated External Defibrillator Deployment Registry also give their support to the effectiveness of AEDs in increasing survival rates from heart attacks and SCA outside hospital settings. View the recommendations here.

The Virtual Office is a risk management tool that helps you to identify hazards and control risks in an office environment. Check it out here. It gives you a great overview of what sort of first-aid equipment you would need in an office and allows you to assess any risks.
